Preparing a short-term rental for its next guest involves more than making beds and wiping countertops. Hosts need to check the property’s condition, organize used linens, clean each room, review supplies, and identify problems that require attention before check-in.

This Airbnb Cleaning Alameda guide provides a practical turnover checklist for hosts who want a repeatable way to prepare their rental between stays. It covers the order of tasks, room-by-room checks, laundry planning, supply tracking, and the final walkthrough. The checklist can be adapted to different property sizes, guest capacities, and checkout schedules.

The goal is simple: make the process easier to follow, reduce missed tasks, and distinguish completed cleaning from issues that require separate attention.

1. Inspect the Property Before Cleaning

Begin with a walkthrough before moving furniture, changing linens, or starting the cleaning routine. This helps identify unusual messes, forgotten belongings, and property issues that might require additional time.

Use this initial checklist:

• Look for belongings left behind by previous guests.
• Note visible spills, stains, or unusually heavy soiling.
• Check furniture, fixtures, and appliances for visible damage.
• Look for leaks, broken items, or other maintenance concerns.
• Identify unusual odors that may need further investigation.
• Review notes or requests from the host about the previous stay.
• Record any issue that could affect the next guest’s use of the property.

Follow the host’s procedures for documenting the property’s condition. Photos can help record damage or an unusual mess when permitted, but avoid photographing personal information or sensitive belongings unnecessarily.

Cleaning and property inspection are separate responsibilities. A cleaner may identify a damaged fixture or maintenance issue without being responsible for repairing it. Report problems promptly and follow the host’s instructions before marking the property ready.

2. Organize Linens and Laundry

Laundry can become a bottleneck when checkout and check-in happen on the same day. If washing is part of the turnover plan, identify the requirements early so you can determine whether clean, dry linens will be available in time.

Linen and laundry checklist

• Remove used sheets and pillowcases from beds.
• Collect used towels and other washable items covered by the agreed plan.
• Keep used linens separate from clean sets.
• Check replacement sheets and towels for visible stains or damage.
• Start an appropriate laundry cycle if the task is included and the equipment is available.
• Confirm that enough clean, dry linens are available for the next stay.
• Store used items in the location designated by the host.

Hosts who manage frequent bookings may benefit from keeping spare sheet and towel sets at the property. Backup linens provide flexibility if a load takes longer than expected or a stain needs additional treatment.

Before the first turnover, establish where clean linens are stored, which items belong to each room, and where used laundry should be placed. Do not assume that every load can be washed and dried within a short checkout window. Fabric type, load size, equipment, and drying conditions all affect the time required.

3. Follow a Room-by-Room Cleaning Checklist

A consistent room order helps prevent missed tasks when several spaces need attention. Use the following list as a starting point, then adjust it to the property and the host’s agreed cleaning scope.

Kitchen

Check the kitchen for food residue, spills, dishes, and visible debris.

• Remove trash and leftover food according to the property’s instructions.
• Wash dishes or load the dishwasher as agreed.
• Clean countertops, the sink, and accessible surfaces.
• Wipe visible splashes from cabinet fronts and appliance exteriors where included.
• Check the stovetop for visible food residue.
• Inspect the refrigerator for spills or leftover food, following the host’s instructions.
• Return commonly used items to their designated locations.
• Sweep or vacuum the floor and mop suitable hard flooring.

Detailed oven cleaning, refrigerator interiors, and cabinet interiors may require extra time or a separately agreed task. Do not assume these jobs belong in every routine turnover.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms need careful attention because visible residue, hair, and damp surfaces are easy to notice.

Check that:

• Toilets, sinks, showers, and tubs have been cleaned according to the agreed scope.
• Mirrors and accessible counters are free from visible residue.
• Used towels have been collected and clean replacements prepared.
• Floors have been cleaned and dried appropriately.
• Trash bins have been emptied.
• Agreed bathroom supplies are available.
• No obvious hair, soap residue, or leftover personal items remain.

If you notice a persistent odor, visible mold, a leak, or another maintenance concern, report it to the host. Cleaning alone may not resolve an underlying property problem.

Bedrooms

Check each bedroom before making the bed. This makes it easier to find forgotten belongings or visible damage before resetting the room.

• Remove used bedding and pillowcases.
• Dust accessible surfaces.
• Check bedside tables, lamps, and other frequently touched areas.
• Inspect bedding and accessible mattress surfaces for visible stains or damage.
• Vacuum carpeted floors or clean hard floors as appropriate.
• Make beds with clean, dry linens.
• Arrange pillows and decorative items according to the host’s instructions.
• Return furniture and approved items to their designated places.

If rooms have different bedding arrangements, keep a simple written reference so the setup remains consistent between visits.

Living Areas and Entryways

Living rooms, hallways, and entrances often collect dust and debris from everyday use.

• Dust accessible tables, shelves, and surfaces.
• Check remotes and other commonly handled items.
• Vacuum rugs and carpeted areas as needed.
• Clean suitable hard floors.
• Inspect upholstery for visible spills, pet hair, or damage.
• Return approved furniture and decorative items to their usual positions.
• Check entrances for dirt, debris, and items left behind.

If a stain or odor needs treatment beyond routine cleaning, record it and consult the host before applying an unfamiliar product.

4. Check Guest Supplies Without Guessing

Restocking works best when the host provides a clear inventory. A cleaner should not have to guess which items belong in the rental, how many should be available, or who is responsible for purchasing replacements.

Create a list of supplies to check before each arrival.

Supply category	What to verify
Bathroom essentials	Agreed soap, toilet paper, and other host-provided supplies
Kitchen supplies	Dishwashing liquid and other items specified by the host
Coffee and tea	Agreed products and quantities
Towels and linens	Clean, dry sets appropriate for the property’s guest capacity
Backup supplies	Storage locations and how low stock should be reported

The host should identify which supplies are already available at the property and which items, if any, are covered by a separate purchasing arrangement.

When an item is missing or running low, record it using the agreed communication method. Restocking should not be assumed to include buying new products unless that responsibility has been explicitly arranged.

5. Complete a Final Walkthrough Before Check-In

The final walkthrough is a separate step from cleaning each room. It helps identify visible omissions and confirms that the agreed tasks have been addressed.

Visual inspection checklist

• Are accessible counters and surfaces visibly clean?
• Have visible debris and hair been removed from floors and bathroom areas?
• Have agreed waste bins been emptied?
• Are clean linens on the beds and used linens stored as instructed?
• Are the supplies on the host’s checklist available?
• Have rooms been returned to the requested arrangement?
• Have visible damage, unusual odors, or maintenance concerns been reported?
• Are any tasks still incomplete?

Property handoff

Before marking the turnover complete:

• Record damage or maintenance concerns.
• Report missing or low-stock supplies.
• Identify tasks that could not be completed.
• Confirm that the agreed rooms and tasks have been addressed.
• Notify the host if a decision is needed before the next guest arrives.

Distinguish between completed work and reported issues. A broken fixture, missing supply, or unresolved stain should not be marked as resolved simply because the cleaning visit has ended.

If the host uses a shared checklist or property management system, record the outcome there so the next person can see what was completed and what remains outstanding.

6. Plan for Short Turnover Windows

A short gap between checkout and check-in requires realistic scheduling. Property size, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, laundry needs, access arrangements, and unexpected mess all affect how much work can be completed.

Before checkout

Confirm the expected departure and arrival times, access instructions, required tasks, and special requests. Make sure the host’s checklist and supply instructions are available before the visit begins.

At the start of the visit

Inspect the property and identify any issues that could change the plan. If laundry is included and equipment is available, begin the required cycle early enough to assess whether the linens can be ready before check-in.

During cleaning

Follow the room-by-room sequence, keep clean and used linens separate, and record unexpected problems. If additional work is needed, notify the host instead of silently extending the agreed scope.

Before the deadline

Complete the final inspection and report outstanding items. If the property cannot reasonably be made ready within the available time, communicate that early so the host can decide how to proceed.

There is no universal turnover time that works for every rental. Same-day cleaning should not be assumed to be feasible until the property’s condition, required tasks, laundry needs, and timing have been considered.

7. Adapt the Checklist to the Type of Stay

A standard checklist creates consistency, but it should not replace judgment about the property’s condition.

Situation	Additional items to review
A short stay	Commonly used surfaces, bathroom condition, dishes, linens, and visible trash
A longer stay	Kitchen residue, bathroom buildup, floors, and the amount of used laundry
A stay involving pets	Agreed areas for pet hair, visible messes, and reported odors
A property with several bedrooms	Bed arrangements and linen requirements for every room
An unusually messy checkout	Condition documentation, approval for extra work, and revised timing
A property with an outdoor space	Whether a balcony, patio, or other exterior area is included in the host’s checklist

These are planning considerations, not a promise that every task belongs in routine cleaning. The host and cleaning provider should agree on the actual scope before work begins.

8. Keep a Simple Turnover Record

A short record helps identify recurring problems and keeps instructions consistent across visits.

For each turnover, record:

• Property and visit date.
• Checkout time and expected ready time.
• Tasks completed.
• Laundry status and remaining linen needs.
• Missing or low-stock supplies.
• Damage or maintenance concerns reported.
• Additional work requested or approved.
• Any outstanding tasks.

This record can be a shared checklist, a digital form, or another method agreed upon by the host and cleaning team. Keep it simple enough to complete consistently.

Over time, these records can help identify patterns, such as supplies that regularly run low, rooms that need extra attention, or turnover windows that are too short for the work required.

What Airbnb Hosts Should Know About Cleaning Expectations

Airbnb’s host ground rules state that listings should be clean and free of health hazards before check-in. Its guidance includes turnover tasks such as handling laundry, removing trash, vacuuming or sweeping, and wiping down surfaces.

Hosts can review the official Airbnb ground rules for home hosts when developing their own cleaning procedure. This checklist is a planning resource, not a replacement for the host’s responsibilities or the platform’s current requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should an Airbnb cleaning checklist include?

A useful checklist covers the initial property inspection, room-by-room cleaning, linens and laundry, agreed supply restocking, final inspection, and a process for reporting damage or incomplete tasks.

When should laundry be started during a turnover?

If laundry is included and the machines are available, start early enough to determine whether the required items can be washed and dried before check-in. Timing depends on load size, fabric, equipment, and drying conditions.

Should every turnover include deep cleaning?

No. Routine turnover cleaning addresses ordinary cleaning needs between stays. Additional deep cleaning may be necessary when there is significant buildup, unusual soiling, or work outside the regular checklist.

Who is responsible for restocking guest supplies?

The host and cleaning provider should agree on this before the first visit. The host should identify required supplies, storage locations, and the process for reporting missing items. Purchasing new products should not be assumed unless agreed upon.

What should happen if damage is found during cleaning?

Record the issue according to the host’s instructions and report it promptly. Cleaning staff should not assume responsibility for repairs or mark a maintenance problem as resolved without confirmation.

How much time should be allowed between guests?

There is no universal time that works for every property. The required time depends on the property’s size and condition, the number of rooms, laundry needs, special requests, and the agreed scope of work.

Can a cleaning checklist guarantee better guest reviews?

No. A checklist can help make cleaning more consistent and reduce missed tasks, but guest reviews and booking outcomes also depend on listing accuracy, communication, amenities, pricing, and the overall experience.

A Repeatable Turnover Process

A reliable turnover begins with clear instructions, a room-by-room checklist, organized linens and supplies, and a final handoff that records outstanding issues.

Adapt this process to the property’s layout, guest capacity, and agreed responsibilities. A consistent routine helps hosts identify missed tasks, manage supplies, and plan realistic turnover windows before the next guest arrives.
