Google Maps: How to download offline maps

This feature is extremely useful, as it lets you look for directions even when you’re in an area without cell coverage or WiFi.

  • If you have a limited data plan, make sure you are connected to WiFi before starting these steps.
  • Download the Google Maps app to your phone.
  • Open the app by clicking on its icon.
  • In the search bar, click on the setting button on the top right-hand side of the screen. It might be 3 dots, 3 lines, or a circular button to the right of the mic button.
  • Click “Offline maps.”
  • Click “Select Your Own Maps.”
  • Zoom out on the map until it covers all of East Bay area, plus a very large area around East Bay area. You should be able to download a large part of East Bay which is recommended.
  • Click “Download.”
  • If you’re on a limited data plan, stay on WiFi until the download is completed.
