Training Guide for Trainers

Introduction

  • This training guide is just that: a guide. It will help make sure the trainee is getting the information needed to go on to be a successful cleaning tech. There may be times you need to adjust the tasks to accommodate the client, yourself or your trainee. As a trainer we need to be allowing the trainee to be doing as much of the cleaning as possible which may mean you need to work at a slower pace than you are used to. That’s ok. We want to make sure the trainee understands its quality and then efficiency. Speed comes with time but quality above all else.

First steps

  • You will be contacted with new trainee info the day prior to training.
  • Please reach out to the trainee to introduce yourself with a warm welcome to the BA House Cleaning.
  • Let the trainee know where to meet you (they will have address) and give them a run down of what the day looks like (how many homes, are they regulars, first time customers? Or any info you feel they should know).
  • Set expectations:
    • You will meet in front of the home, review the app to see any important information to help you gain access, notes, etc.
    • Then get equipment out and prepare to enter the home.
  • Let them know what they should be wearing, remind them to bring water, and eat breakfast. (black, gray pants, green or blue shirt, non slip shoes)
  • Be prepared by reviewing the checklist for the next day.
  • Make sure you lead by example yourself!!!!!!!!!

Areas of focus each day of training

  • Day 1 – Bathrooms, floors
  • Day 2 – Kitchen
  • Day 3 – Dusting
  • Day 4 – Floors
  • Day 5 – First time/One time and area of weakness

TRAINING DAY 1

  • Wait for them to arrive.
  • Welcome them with a smile 🙂
  • Review the info as stated the night before.
  • If they are not in the correct uniform they will need to go home and change.
  • Follow Quality Assurance Cards/Checklist.
  • Have your trainee clock themselves in and show them how we check into the first home of the day. Discuss the clients account information and go over.  This should be done before checking into each home of the day.
  • Items in your caddy should be gone over; explaining the chemicals and tools, what each one is used for and where they should be used. **This is a great time to explain to the trainee that they are only allowed to use products provided by the company.
  • Your trainee should be cleaning bathrooms and working on floors on Day 1.
  • In your first main bathroom; have the trainee watch you clean the bathroom and explain not only how you are cleaning things but why you are doing it that way. Have your trainee clean the remaining bathrooms in the home, but ALWAYS check their work before floors are completed. Have the trainee make any necessary corrections.
  • Your trainee should be learning how to properly vacuum hard surface floors, what items on floors should be moved and how to remove all debris whilst prepping floors for mopping. Have the trainee watch you do one room and then watch the trainee do a room.
  • Once the floors are ready; show your trainee how to make mop water and then start the mopping process. It is very important to discuss that water needs to be hot, how much cleaner goes in the water, the type of mop head to use as, well as different floor types. Wood floors are mopped differently than tile and so forth.
  • Throughout the day take every opportunity to teach. If you are doing carpeted stairs / then explain how wood stairs would be cleaned instead, discuss stone sinks vs. stainless sinks in kitchens, stone showers vs. plastic tub inserts, leather couches vs. upholstered furniture etc. Encouraging the trainee to ask questions helps them build their confidence and shows them that they have a support system in you.
  • Let them know that on Thursday you will go to the office to get supplies.

TRAINING DAY 2

  • Have your trainee clock in for the day and check you into your first home. Ask the trainee what type of clean it is based on the customers profile and have them tell you what those tasks are and if there’s any information in the clients account you need to be aware of prior to entering the home. Make sure the trainee is checking in and out of each house during the day to help them start building up that habit. Have them tell you the arrival time for the next homes.
  • Today’s training focus should be on kitchen and floors.
  • You will both go clean the kitchen together. This is when you show them how to carefully move items on countertops, proper ways to clean the appliances, how to check countertops. Just like on Day 1; make sure you are going over how to clean different types of countertop surfaces, sink finishes, appliance finishes, etc. When the kitchen is finished, have the trainee start on the floors while you complete any unfinished bathrooms and dusting duties. The trainee can vacuum all the carpeting in the home and then start getting hard surface floors vacuumed and ready for mopping.
  • Do the same tasks at the second and third home of the day, but the trainee will be cleaning the kitchens on their own, you will just be checking their work and then have them make necessary corrections. If you can see the trainee is doing well with the vacuuming of hard surface floors you can switch up that task and you do the vacuuming and have the trainee be mopping.
  • Just like Day 1, take those opportunities to be teaching. There is so much to learn.

TRAINING DAY 3 (Check-in Day)

  • Trainee Evaluation form Due by 12pm (Link to form: https://form.jotform.com/221045546435048
  • Day 3 should focus on dusting duties. This means the trainee will be doing everything but the bathrooms and kitchen in each home. At your first home, have them collect trash, clean ceiling fans and check for cobwebs. You will explain that ideally they should be dusting the master bedroom first. Explain that the items we should have with us when dusting are a wet-rag, a dry-rag, glass cleaner, a feather duster, two-step ladder and (if needed) furniture polish (lemon oil). You will have them watch you dust the master bedroom showing how we clean left to right, top to bottom, areas that need to be wet wiped vs. feather dusted, how items need to be CAREFULLY lifted as we dust, how to deal with cluttered areas, explaining if the bed is not covered with items we need to make the bed, if a client leaves bedsheets on top of the bed we change that bed (one bedsheet change included only, others are extra $$$). After the master bedroom is finished; have them dust the rest of the home, but be continuously checking their work before they start on floors and having them make any necessary corrections. You will be cleaning the bathrooms and the kitchen in each home. This should be repeated for the remaining homes of the day.
  • Just like on Day 1 & 2 take every opportunity to be teaching and encourage questions!
  • Show them how weekly supplies order is done.
  • By the end of Day 3 your trainee should have a good grasp of what we do as solo cleaners and be ready for Day 4.  If you have any concerns *make sure you bring them to the attention of management and office personnel.* These issues need to be addressed and office staff can help you with the best way to correct these issues.

TRAINING DAY 4

  • So ideally on Day 4 your trainee should feel confident in what they have learned in the previous 3 days and be ready to start combining bathroom, kitchen and dusting duties. If you feel like your trainee has been struggling with a certain area of the home, then this is the day to have them work on those areas more. If they seem to be taking too long cleaning the bathrooms, then have them get more practice in the bathrooms today. If they had lots of corrections in their dusting the previous day, then have them do dusting in all the homes. If they are doing great in all areas then you want to have your trainee start at the opposite end of each house and clean towards you and then you both can split floor duties. Make sure when splitting the floor duties you are rotating who is doing the vacuuming and who is mopping. Most likely your trainee won’t be as fast as you but that’s ok and make sure they know that (quality first then efficiency). What you are looking for is does your trainee know the correct order and proper way to work through the home for efficiency. The best way to gauge this is to ask them if they were there cleaning alone, where would they start in the house and then what areas they would do after that and have them explain that to you. If they get confused, guide them in the right direction and explain why it would work better.
  • If you have not had the chance to do a TTB or MI/MO then you should be going over how those cleaners are done VS. a regular  and be showing them the Quality Assurance Cards for those types of cleans.
  • Try and allow the trainee to be doing as much of the cleaning as possible on Day 4.
  • You also need to inform the office staff on Day 4 if your trainee is going solo after Day 5 or if training should not continue, why you feel that way and the next step.
  • Bring trainee to office check in

TRAINING DAY 5

  • If training is going well, Day 5 should look a lot like Day 4, but it’s also the time to be asking the trainee what areas in the home they feel less confident cleaning and work on those areas giving additional coaching so as to build more confidence. We also should be setting an expectation first thing on Day 5 that the trainee should be able to run the show so to speak. They should be ok with you stepping back and letting them just run the cleans that day knowing where to start and also a good time to tell them how good they have been doing. Reassure them that with more time it’s going to feel more comfortable and they will gain more confidence. Us letting them know we have faith in them goes a long way. It is also the day to make sure you have covered as much as you can with them. Have they cleaned stairs, different stovetops (glass, electric ,gas), learned different mopping methods for different floor types and so on? It is also the day you will pick up their equipment so make sure to make time in the day to do that – *COMMUNICATE WITH OFFICE ON ETA OF ARRIVAL* Congratulations on a successful training week!
  • Vacuum Maintenance Training:
    • Cleaning the vacuum brush after each home
    • Wiping down the handles and the vacuum itself
    • Changing the vacuum bag
    • Changing the vacuum filter
    • Unclogging the hose using a metal hanger
    • Reiterate to take good care of their equipment never vacuum up large items such as water bottle caps, quarters, etc
  • At the end of the day ensure they feel comfortable going solo or determine if they need additional training.
    • If so please come up with an action plan together and contact management to discuss it as well.
  • Help them with any other questions they may have.
  • Double-check if they are still feeling ok, or if they have any last minute questions.
  • Make sure they are logged into MaidCentral properly on their phones and see their schedule for the next day.
    • Username is their email.
    • Make sure they have the slack setup on their phone and is receiving notifications.
  • Encourage them to reach out with any questions.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

  • Has your trainee read the entire Tech Resources? (Link: https://bahousecleaning.com/tech-resources-2)
  • Do they know The 13 Rules and the BAHC’s Approach?
  • Teach how to have an eye to clean, do not always tell them. Ask them.
  • What to do if there’s breakage? How to AVOID breakage.
  • Do they know what add-ons are and where to find them in Maid Central?
  • Do they know the closed door policy and proper protocol?
  • If you haven’t had a MIMO or TTB together, have you gone over in very specific detail how those cleans are done?
  • Don’t worry if the trainee seems a bit slower (not 2 hr bathroom slow – but you get it) if quality is spot on we can help them with their efficiency?
  • Ensure we reviewed expectations like dress-code, phone policy, attendance, quality/efficiency expectations?
  • Did we teach them proper customer etiquette? Ensuring we smile and provide A1 customer service!
